Diversity Statement

ESL/EFL education is an inherently diverse and inclusive discipline. As an ESL instructor, I proudly hold a unique position working with multilingual students from vastly different backgrounds. My role demands embracing student diversity and creating welcoming environments where learners feel empowered to engage openly using both their native and the target language. One of the most important reasons I chose to be an ESL teacher is that I love to know people across cultures, their life experiences, perspectives, and linguistic repertoires.

My teaching philosophy centers on diversity as a core strength. I design courses, facilitate discussions, select materials, and craft assessments aiming to leverage students’ array of talents and ways of knowing. Collaborative projects allow intercultural teams to pool complementary skills. Think-pair-shares let students articulate ideas to a peer before whole-class dialogue. Readings intentionally represent traditionally marginalized voices, which sparks fruitful debate on the interplay between language, power, and positionality. Regular feedback surveys provide an opportunity for students to evaluate the inclusive climate.

Overall, diversity is a multifaceted concept, but the key is realizing students have knowledge and insights beyond my own. My aim is to nurture student voices by minimizing barriers to expression. While not every topic lends itself easily to diversity dialogue, I incorporate perspective-taking and respectful interchange of ideas wherever possible. Applying principles of inclusive pedagogy has enriched courses and allowed more students to feel capable as learners. I hope to continue improving as an advocate through continually evaluating and enhancing equity practices.
